What are Best Management Practices? They are voluntary steps that will limit the amount of waste amalgam that escapes from a dental office and enters the public water systems
Why use Best Management Practices? There are advocates at all levels of government (local, state and federal) who support strict mandatory controls on amalgam discharge from dental offices. The ADA has entered into an agreement with the EPA to promote the voluntary use of amalgam separators and the ADA’s Best Management Practices. The ADA and ADS believe voluntary programs are the most effective way to control amalgam waste and to prevent the imposition of costly and unnecessary government regulations.
Your adoption of the ADA’s Best Management Practices, including the installation of amalgam separators and support of the ADA’s agreement is the best way to demonstrate that voluntary efforts work. With your installation of a separator and adoption of BMP, dentistry can demonstrate its commitment to environmental stewardship and become a virtual non-contributor of mercury to the nation’s sewers and landfills. It will also negate the case for mandatory controls.
Both the use of separators and BMP are supported by the Alaska Dental Society for all it members who place or remove amalgam fillings. Please use the link above ADA to download the current BMP. If you use an amalgam separator or when you install one please contact the ADS office. Documentation of the numbers of offices using separators and BMP will be a key factor in the continuation of voluntary measures.
