RM11: Charting the Course

John Tiemessen

Patient records are one of the most important tools for delivering continuous, consistent care and promoting positive relations with patients.  They are vital for supporting diagnostic and treatment decisions. TDIC’s claims experience reveals that the quality of patient charts often impacts case outcomes. Using actual case examples, RM11: Charting the Course explores some of the significant features of proper recordkeeping and addresses how new technology is changing the way dentists document and maintain patient records. After completing this course, you will:

§         Understand that a complete patient record is more than just treatment notes

§         Appreciate the importance of thorough and appropriate documentation

§         Realize how recordkeeping affects continuity of care

§         Understand the risks associated with allowing patients to dictate treatment

§         Distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of electronic recordkeeping

§         Be able to implement changes to your own recordkeeping system

TDIC policyholders who complete this seminar will earn a two-year, 5 percent discount on their professional liability premium.  ADS members who attend and are accepted for TDIC coverage will also be eligible for this discount. This seminar qualifies for 3.0 Academy of General Dentistry credits.

John Tiemessen is a partner in the Alaska law firm of Clapp Peterson Van Flein Tiemessen & Thorsness.  He has been in practice in Alaska since 1991 and is recognized for his expertise in dental malpractice and for his long standing association with the Alaska Dental Society.

Digital Imaging in Dentistry

James R. Clark,

Dental Photography is an extremely valuable tool for practicing dentists and dental educators. The old adage that "a picture is worth a thousand words" is never truer then when discussing a patient’s dental concerns.  Digital imaging adds a new and exciting dimension to communicating with patients, referring dentists and specialists. The various aspects of photography and imaging and how it relates to dentistry will be discussed. The latest equipment, both hardware and software will be addressed. Intra- and extra-oral photography and the photography of other dental related subjects will be covered in detail.

The workshop session will allow the participant to practice the techniques taught in the morning lecture. After taking both extra and intra-oral photos we will download and process some of the images into a clinical photo collage. By using a laptop computer and a digital projector everyone can see how easy it is to work with digital dental photography.

Course Objectives

·         To acquaint the novice dental photographer with the techniques required for excellent clinical views.

·         To update the seasoned dental photographer in the latest equipment.

·         To teach the participant simple ways to photograph other dental subjects such as wax-ups, models, radiographs, etc.

·         To introduce the clinician to Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft PowerPoint and how they relate to dentistry.

·         How to incorporate digital imaging into the participant’s practice and presentations.

Jim Clark is a Photographer and Lecturer for the School of Dentistry University of Washington
