Lab Tech Certification goes Modular
The National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC) has launched a “Modularization Program.” The first round of written modularization exams for the Crown and Bridge specialty was given on November 19, 2007 at Davis Dental Laboratory, CDL in Grand Rapids, Mich.
NBC’s Modularization Program verifies a dental technician’s skill and knowledge in a specific area of dental restoration manufacturing by awarding Certificates of Competency. Certificates are available in 12 modules within the five dental technology specialties (crown and bridge, ceramics, partial dentures, complete dentures and orthodontics). Each module represents a specific task within a specialty. To earn a certificate, technicians must pass written and practical exams as well as meet other criteria.
Candidate Linda Amshey of Davis Dental Laboratory, CDL stated, “I have always been a metal finisher at my laboratory. I’m proud of what I do and I do it very well. This gave me an opportunity to demonstrate my years of experience and abilities. And in the process, it challenged me to expand my knowledge.”
The National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC) was formed in 1955 as an independent certification organization dedicated to improving the quality of dental laboratory technology through voluntary testing and certification of dental laboratories and technicians.
